Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: You are assigned to repair a section of highway that has been damaged by heavy rainfall and flooding. The damage includes several potholes and washboards on a 2-mile stretch of road. What would be your first step in assessing the situation and planning the repair?

To assess the situation and plan the repair, I would first conduct a visual inspection of the affected area to identify the extent of the damage and any potential hazards such as debris or standing water. Next, I would consult with my supervisor or a senior colleague to discuss possible repair options and determine the most effective course of action. This may involve using specialized equipment such as a loader or excavator to remove debris or fill in low-lying areas, or utilizing materials like asphalt patching or gravel to stabilize the road surface. Additionally, I would ensure that all necessary safety protocols are followed, including setting up traffic control and providing warning signs to drivers. My goal would be to identify the most efficient and effective way to repair the damage while minimizing disruptions to traffic.

Question 2: You are operating a Class A Highway truck on a section of road with low visibility due to heavy fog. Suddenly, a vehicle appears out of nowhere and attempts to pass you on the left. How would you react in this situation?

In this situation, my top priority would be the safety of myself, my colleagues, and other drivers on the road. I would immediately take evasive action by slowing down or moving to the side of the road if possible, while also using my mirrors and looking over my shoulder to ensure that there are no other vehicles nearby. If the vehicle attempting to pass me is unable to stop in time, I would prepare for a potential collision by putting on my hazard lights and bringing my vehicle to a safe stop. Once stopped, I would contact my supervisor or dispatch to report the incident and provide as much information as possible about what happened. My goal would be to prevent any potential accidents while also protecting myself and others from harm.

Question 3: You have been assigned to design and set up traffic control operations for a road closure due to bridge maintenance. What considerations would you take into account when planning the traffic control, and what steps would you take to ensure that it is executed safely and effectively?

When designing and setting up traffic control operations for a road closure, I would take into account factors such as the type of road or bridge being closed, the expected volume of traffic, the available space for detour routes, and any potential hazards or obstacles along the detour route. I would also consult with my supervisor or a senior colleague to ensure that all necessary permits and approvals have been obtained. To execute the traffic control safely and effectively, I would set up clear and visible signs indicating the road closure and detour routes, while also implementing adequate traffic control devices such as cones, barrels, or flaggers. I would also coordinate with local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that they are aware of the road closure and can provide support if needed. Throughout the operation, I would continuously monitor the situation and make adjustments as necessary to maintain a safe and efficient flow of traffic.
