Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Can you describe a time when you had to troubleshoot and repair an access control system, such as an A-MAG system or Essex proximity readers? How did you identify the issue and what steps did you take to resolve it?

In my previous role as a locksmith, I was responsible for maintaining and repairing various access control systems on our company's premises. One particular instance that comes to mind is when I encountered an A-MAG system that wasn't functioning properly. Upon initial inspection, I noticed that the system was not responding to card reader inputs. After verifying that all connections were secure and reviewing the system's manual, I used my troubleshooting skills to isolate the issue to a faulty proximity reader module. To resolve the issue, I replaced the module with a new one and recalibrated the system according to the manufacturer's guidelines. The system was back online within an hour, and our employees were able to access the restricted areas without any issues.

Question 2: How would you approach rekeying or re-coreing an electronic key box on a vessel? What steps would you take to ensure that the process is done correctly and efficiently?

When it comes to rekeying or re-coreing an electronic key box, I follow a systematic approach to ensure accuracy and efficiency. First, I would verify that I have all necessary tools and equipment, including the correct key code or blank. Next, I would consult the manufacturer's instructions for specific guidance on the process. If required, I would also use specialized software to generate the new key code or re-core specifications. Once prepared, I would carefully remove the existing core or insert the new one, making sure not to damage any surrounding components. Finally, I would test the system to ensure that it functions correctly and make any necessary adjustments.

Question 3: What steps would you take to maintain accurate security records for US Coast Guard standards? Can you provide an example of a time when you had to document a security-related issue or incident?

Maintaining accurate security records is crucial in my role as a locksmith. To ensure compliance with US Coast Guard standards, I would regularly review and update our security protocols, including logging all access control system maintenance, repairs, and key issuances. In the event of an incident or security breach, I would thoroughly document the details, including dates, times, and descriptions of events. For instance, if a TWIC reader failed to function properly during peak hours, I would record the issue in our logbook, along with any necessary photos or screenshots for reference. This meticulous documentation helps us identify trends, resolve problems efficiently, and demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements.
