Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Describe your experience with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. How do you ensure compliance with these specifications when designing bridge structures?

I have extensive experience working with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, particularly in the design of highway bridges. To ensure compliance, I follow a rigorous review process that involves checking calculations and designs against the relevant provisions of the specification. This includes verifying that loads, material properties, and structural capacities are accurately accounted for. Additionally, I regularly consult with colleagues and industry experts to stay up-to-date on any updates or revisions to the specification. When designing bridge structures, I also ensure that all aspects of the design comply with WSDOT standards and guidelines. For instance, I carefully evaluate factors such as foundation conditions, soil properties, and water table elevations when designing foundations for bridges. My approach has been successful in producing designs that meet or exceed industry standards while ensuring safety and reliability.

Question 2: You are tasked with reviewing structural plans and details for a large bridge project. What specific aspects of the design would you focus on to ensure compliance with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications?

When reviewing structural plans and details, my primary focus is on verifying that all critical components of the design, including loads, materials, and structural capacities, are accurately accounted for in accordance with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. I would carefully examine calculations for member sizes, foundation conditions, soil properties, and water table elevations to ensure they align with industry standards. Additionally, I would evaluate any deviations from the original design concept or WSDOT guidelines, checking whether the proposed changes comply with relevant specifications and codes. Furthermore, I would scrutinize construction details such as connections, joints, and anchorages to ensure they meet structural integrity requirements. By methodically reviewing these aspects of the design, I can provide thorough feedback that ensures compliance with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.

Question 3: A design-build project is facing challenges due to unforeseen site conditions. Describe how you would facilitate resolution and ensure the structure's safety and reliability.

When confronted with unexpected site conditions in a design-build project, my primary goal is to facilitate resolution while prioritizing the safety and reliability of the structure. First, I engage closely with the project engineer, construction office staff, and consultants involved in the project to gather information about the issues at hand. Then, I work collaboratively with all stakeholders to identify potential solutions that address both technical and contractual requirements. In many cases, this involves consulting industry experts, revisiting design assumptions, or adjusting construction techniques as needed. If required, I also prepare technical memoranda or letters of opinion explaining any proposed changes or modifications to the original design concept. Throughout this process, my primary concern is ensuring that all decisions made are in line with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and WSDOT standards while minimizing potential risks to project timelines and budgets.
