Help shape a safer workplace across the state in this impactful role as a trusted training professional. 


In this position, you’ll support the agency’s mission by ensuring occupational health and safety training is thoughtfully developed, effectively delivered, and accurately documented for a diverse workforce of approximately 2,500 employees, volunteers, student interns, and contractors.


Working closely with training and safety professionals, you’ll play a key role in identifying training needs tied to real-world job hazards and ensuring programs meet regulatory requirements while reducing risk, liability, and adverse outcomes. 


You’ll plan, develop, and deliver a variety of courses, either directly or through managed training contracts, and ensure all training is properly tracked within the learning management system.


This role also focuses on continuous improvement, giving you the opportunity to evaluate and enhance training systems and programs to better support the agency’s evolving safety needs.



What to Expect-

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Occupational Health & Safety Training Coordinator will,


Facilitate, develop, and deliver occupational health and safety training via contracts, in-person, virtual, or e-learning courses:

  • Collaborate with the Safety Program regarding identified job hazards that require occupational health and safety training to mitigate risk.
  • Conduct research on best practices and evidence-based training to meet regulatory requirements and address identified hazards.
  • Develop and implement statewide training plans.
  • Maintain agency-designated instructor certifications to provide consultation, training, and course evaluation. 
  • Demonstrate proper operation and handling of equipment and tools per course certifications.
  • Research, develop, and manage contracted training.
  • Maintain constant awareness of best practice training that meets state and national standards. 


Provide professional training consultation and develop, disseminate, and respond to employee training communications:

  • In collaboration with Training Coordinators, develop, disseminate, and maintain agency training communications, including announcements, requirements, and reminders. 
  • Ensure all classes and schedules are posted on the agency training calendar.
  • Provide supervisors and employees with individualized consultation regarding training requirements, including available classes, prerequisites, attendance, participation, course content, registration, completion, and documentation.


Manage training equipment inventory, logistics, and maintenance:

  • Coordinate training logistics, including facilities, scheduling, locations, and instructors.
  • Maintain training personal protective equipment (PPE) and equipment inventory, including maintenance, replacement, and storage. 
  • Maintain inventory and service of all equipment, vehicles, and vessels.


Collaborate across the department to develop and maintain agency policies, standard operating procedures, safety manuals, and guidelines involving occupational health and safety training:

  • Provide subject matter expertise to support the development and maintenance of training systems to Safety Team, Program Leadership, Safety Council, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and deliver training on policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), accident prevention plans (APPs), PPEs, equipment use, and emergency procedures.



WORKING CONDITIONS:


Work Setting, including hazards:

Work in remote areas, office, on and around water, operating vehicles, All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV)/ Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTV), snowmobiles, heavy equipment, machinery, chainsaws, tools, chemicals, confined spaces and other job hazards identified requiring training. This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments. 


Schedule:

Typically, Monday to Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules. This position is eligible for telework as agreed upon with Supervisor and agency training needs.


Travel Requirements:

Travel up to 25% of time to provide statewide training.


Tools and Equipment:

Truck, trailer, ATV, UTV, snowmobiles, and personal protective equipment (PPE).


Customer Interactions:

Interact with the Executive Management Team, supervisors/managers and employees, volunteers, student interns, contractors, external partners, and the public.



QUALIFICATIONS:


Required Qualifications: 


Option 1:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Organizational Development, Training, Occupational Health and Safety, Natural Resources, Recreation Resource Management, Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement, Risk Management, or closely allied field.

AND

  • Two (2) years of professional, full-time, paid experience in a specialized professional program that includes responsibility for all of the following: 
    • Training/education.
    • Safety.
    • Logistics coordination.
    • Consultation with a variety of stakeholders. 


Option 2:

  • Associates degree in Education, Organizational Development, Training, Occupational Health and Safety, Natural Resources, Recreation Resource Management, Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement, Risk Management, or closely allied field.

AND

  • Four (4) years of professional, full-time, paid experience in a specialized professional program that includes responsibility for all of the following: 
    • Training/education.
    • Safety.
    • Logistics coordination.
    • Consultation with a variety of stakeholders.


Option 3:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

AND

  • Six (6) years of professional, full-time, paid experience in a specialized professional program that includes responsibility for all of the following: 
    • Training/education.
    • Safety.
    • Logistics coordination.
    • Consultation with a variety of stakeholders.


Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:

  • Experience developing and delivering occupational health and safety training programs, particularly in field-based or high-risk environments.
  • Knowledge of state and federal safety regulations (e.g., Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA] / Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act [WISHA]) and the ability to apply them effectively within training programs.
