The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking multiple Electrical and Electronic Systems Specialists (In- Training) for the Signal Maintenance Offices in the Renton and Kent, WA area. The Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 3 - Transportation (EESS3) is a senior-level specialist that will install, maintain, and repair electrical, electronic and communication systems used in transportation and highway infrastructure owned or operated by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), and agencies that we have written agreements with, which connects local and national transportation infrastructures.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Signals EESS3 will:

• Diagnose and repair Traffic Signal control cabinets.
• Identify and repair traffic signal displays.
• Perform Underground Utility Locates
• Secure and repair motor vehicle knockdowns (KI’s); Identify equipment and circuit problems employing a variety of test equipment. 
• Diagnose electrical problems in control systems, repairing changeable message signs, ramp metering systems, weather stations, variable message signs, data stations, cameras, communication systems including wireless, and traffic signal systems. 
• Perform repairs within guidelines of NEC and WSDOT codes and regulations. 
• Perform aerial repairs employing a bucket truck vehicle. 
• Respond to call outs after hours for emergencies and work scheduled overtime as needed.
• Schedule and perform preventative maintenance on traffic equipment including CCTV, HARS/HARTS, RWIS, VMS
• Follow proper preventative maintenance procedures for each specific highway system. This includes vegetation control, graffiti removal, corrosion removal, local and remote systems check, and any other various electrical/electronic equipment in the inventory of signal maintenance responsibility. 
• Implement traffic control.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity at the Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -Trainee level, the following are required:

• High School Diploma or GED 
• Working knowledge of Basic Algebra 

To be considered for this opportunity at the Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -1 level, the following are required:

• Four (4) years (approximately 8,000 hours) of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.
• Possession of a valid Washington State journey or master-level electrical license (EL01, EL04, EL07, or ME01) may substitute for some education or experience.

OR

To be considered for this opportunity at the Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -3 level, the following are required:

• Five (5) years (approximately 10,000 hours) of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical, and/or electronic work.
• Possession of a valid Washington State journey or master-level electrical license (EL01, EL06, EL07, or ME01) may substitute for some education or experience.

OR

The following are required at all EESS levels: 

• High School Diploma or GED
• Valid Driver's License
• Class B CDL endorsement without air brake restriction (or acquire within 6 months from date of hire for an EESS 1 or 2)
• Ability to see and differentiate colors to perform electrical and electronic maintenance and repair work safely.
• Ability to relocate and carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment and move about unrestrictedly while climbing stairs/ladders/inclines and uneven surfaces.
• Ability to work at heights exceeding 100 feet in/around/over live traffic and 600 feet above water on bridges.
• Ability to perform overhead work.
• Ability to communicate effectively, in English both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work with blueprints, plans, sketches, and specifications.
• Ability to input information into databases utilizing a computer.
• Ability to perform basic algebraic equations.
• Knowledge of how to operate basic testing equipment for electrical/electronic systems including fiber optics.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

• Journey Level Electrician (EL01, EL02, EL04, or EL07) 
• Electronics Certification by Washington State CET or International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET) 
• A+ certification for computers and electronics 
• Class A CDL endorsement 
• Washington State Flagging Card

Important Notes 

• This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
• This position is not eligible for remote work.
• The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. 
• This position includes an approved in-training plan; therefore, it may be filled at the Trainee, 1, 2 or 3 level. The salaries for these classifications are as follows:
  1. Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -Trainee: $56,914 - $69,312 annually depending on qualifications.
  2. Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 1: $72,865 - $88,741 annually depending on qualifications.
  3. Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 2: $80,438 - $98,015 annually depending on qualifications.
  4. Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 3: $84,483 - $102,942 annually depending on qualifications.
• In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
