The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and Department of Enterprise Services (DES) managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, over 6,000 parking stalls, four state parks and a 260-acre lake. B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs: Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Admin, Maintenance & Repairs, Support Services (Custodial).

About the Opportunity: 
As a Stationary Engineer 2, you will maintain and repair steam boilers, central steam distribution systems, and related mechanical equipment, as well as commercial refrigeration systems that support air conditioning, ventilation, and chilled water operations. You’ll analyze, maintain, and install electrical, electronic, and pneumatic control systems, including temperature and humidity controls for heating and ventilation. The position also performs preventive maintenance on water treatment systems such as cooling towers and hot and chilled water loops, supports powerhouse operations, and serves as the primary after-hours contact for non-emergency facility calls for Thurston County DES–owned buildings.

Duties

Some of What You’ll Enjoy Doing Includes:

• Operate and maintain the Powerhouse, supporting day-to-day plant operations.
• Run the high-pressure steam heating plant that provides steam heat, hot water, and chilled water to 13 Capitol Campus buildings.
• Operate, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, compressors, condensers, steam/condensate return lines, steam traps, water lines, controls, and meters.
• Use the Metasys central control system to monitor and adjust campus steam and chilled water systems.
• Perform boiler water and feedwater testing and treatment to ensure reliable system performance.
• Conduct hourly equipment walkthroughs, log readings, inspect assets, and take corrective action for out-of-range conditions following procedures.
• Monitor Capitol Lake levels and dam operations via Metasys, and notify supervision of issues that could create flooding or critically low water levels.
• Serve as the primary after-hours contact for non-emergency issues at Thurston County DES–owned facilities, receiving, prioritizing, and dispatching service requests.
• Document incidents as needed by initiating reports and entering details into the Mainsaver system and plant logbooks.
• Other duties as needed. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

• High School Diploma or GED. 
• Three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repairs of high-pressure boilers and heating equipment OR Certificate of completion of an advanced Stationary and/or Marine Engineering course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college. 

In addition to the above required qualifications, a candidate must possess one (1) of the following options to qualify:

• One (1) year of experience as a Stationary Engineer 1 in state service.

[OPTION 2]

• Three (3) years as a Steam Propulsion Engineer.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of boiler law methods, fuels, materials and tools used in operation and maintenance of high-pressure boilers and associated auxiliary equipment. 
• Knowledge of boiler room safety, heating, lighting, ventilations, power and other related mechanical equipment, standard types of automatic control.
• Ability to test and analyze operation of steam boilers and auxiliary equipment; instruct and supervise others. 
• Ability to keep records, make written reports, perform heavy manual labor, work under and withstand extremes of temperature. 
• Knowledge and experience in chilled water plant operations and maintenance.
• Can be relied upon to achieve excellent results with little need for oversite. Earns the trust, respect and confidence of co-workers and customers through consistent honesty, forthrightness, and professionalism in all interactions.
• Ability to work independently with little or no on-site supervisory direction.
