As Team Leader, you will maintain a diverse and complex litigation caseload, including litigating contested matters, conducting witness interviews, handling discovery (including depositions), retaining and preparing experts, and developing trial strategies. The Seattle Section of the Torts Division has an immediate opening for a managing trial attorney eager to practice in state and federal courts throughout Washington and lead a dynamic team of litigation attorneys. This critical role is ideal for an attorney who is ready to lead, mentor, and drive meaningful outcomes in service of the State. As a managing attorney, you will handle complex litigation that influences policy and sets important legal precedents. You will also play a vital role in fostering the professional development of a dynamic team within the AGO.


The Torts Division represents State agencies and State employees who do the hard work of serving the citizens of Washington when they are sued for damages. Attorneys in the Torts Division, with support from professional staff and investigators, handle cases from inception through resolution, involving diverse clients and theories of liability, with continuous support, training, and development. If you are interested in growing and developing as an oral and written advocate, working on challenging issues and cases, and belonging to a dedicated and supportive team, then the Torts Division is the place for you.


The Torts Division’s Seattle Office is located on the 21st floor in the Bank of America Fifth Avenue Plaza at 800 5th Avenue. Duties

We seek self- motivated, hardworking, attorneys who value working as a team defending state agencies and state employees that are devoted to serving the interests of all Washington citizens. As a Team Leader in this division, you will lead one of these teams, overseeing a group of attorneys and paralegals, while working closely with other team leaders and staff to ensure the effective management of complex litigation cases. You will provide guidance, mentorship, and support to attorneys of varying experience levels as they handle a diverse range of legal matters.


While focusing on your team’s casework, you will also play an active role in shaping division-wide goals and strategies to enhance client representation and professional development. You will collaborate with other leaders within the Torts Division to develop and implement strategies for improving the work environment and achieving client goals. In addition, you will serve as a key point of contact for cases managed by your team and will regularly communicate with supervisors and the administrative office manager to provide updates and input on the work being done.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the requirements to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, the successful candidate will have:

  • An expressed interest in the practice of public sector law;
  • Excellent writing and oral advocacy skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Judgment and discretion in handling sensitive issues;
  • Extensive mediation experience; and
  • Litigation experience, in particular as insurance defense counsel.


Torts litigation experience, while advantageous, is not essential. This position is located in King County and is eligible for 5% King County Assignment Pay.
