Sample Interview Questions and Answers

Question 1: Describe a specific situation where you had to implement infection control procedures to ensure a safe environment for residents. How did you handle it?

In my previous role at a long-term care facility, I encountered a resident with a suspected MRSA infection. I immediately followed the facility's infection control protocol by donning appropriate PPE, isolating the resident, and ensuring all surfaces were disinfected using EPA-registered products. I also coordinated with the infection control team to conduct a thorough environmental assessment and educated the staff on proper hand hygiene practices. This proactive approach helped prevent the spread of infection and maintained a safe environment for all residents.

Question 2: How would you prioritize tasks during a high-stress emergency, such as a fire drill or a resident medical emergency?

During a medical emergency, I would first ensure the safety of the resident and staff by following established protocols. For example, if a resident experienced a sudden cardiac arrest, I would immediately call for help, initiate CPR if trained, and use the emergency response system to alert the nursing staff. Simultaneously, I would document the incident accurately and communicate clearly with the team to coordinate care. In a fire drill, I would quickly evacuate residents to a designated safe area, ensuring all individuals with mobility challenges are assisted, and confirm that everyone is accounted for post-evacuation.

Question 3: Explain the importance of accurate documentation in resident care and provide an example of how you have maintained detailed records in your previous role.

Accurate documentation is critical for continuity of care, legal compliance, and resident safety. In my previous position, I meticulously recorded residents' vital signs, medication administration, and any changes in their condition using an electronic health record system. For instance, I once noticed a resident's blood pressure fluctuating significantly over several days. By documenting these changes in detail, I was able to alert the nursing supervisor promptly, leading to an early intervention that prevented a potential complication. This attention to detail ensured that the care team had a clear, accurate record to guide treatment decisions.
