SEATTLE —Seattle celebrated the opening of a new 1.2-mile protected bike lane along the city’s waterfront Saturday morning.

The City of Seattle’s Office of the Waterfront, Civic Projects, and Sound Transit, along with Deputy Mayor Jessyn Farrell, Cascade Bicycle Club, Seattle Neighborhood Greenways, and community members, marked the occasion.

The city says the new two-way bike path provides a crucial link for cyclists between Pioneer Square and Belltown, connecting to the existing Portside trail to the south and eventually to the Elliott Bay trail, Myrtle Edwards Park, and Centennial Park to the north.

“The 1.2-mile-long bike path delivers the City’s overall vision for a greener, more connected cityscape,” officials said in a press release.

The Waterfront Park Promenade features mixed-use intersections and local access driveways where pedestrians and vehicles cross the new bike lanes. Clear markings, signs, and signals are in place to alert travelers to the need to look out for others and follow applicable laws.

Mid-block driveways to piers are marked with green paint noting areas where bicycles and cars cross paths, consistent with similar visual cues provided throughout the city

Other design features include strategic narrowing and curving of the bike lanes to slow down bicyclists as they approach intersections, lighting, edge and centerline markings, flexi-posts, and signage.

The connection between Virginia and Broad streets is currently under construction by the Alaskan Way Safety Project and Elliott Bay Connections.

Mayor Bruce Harrell said, “Today’s celebration is about more than a protected bike lane – it’s a recognition of a collective vision coming to life. The transformation of our Waterfront is creating a space where all people – walking, rolling, or biking – can connect, explore, and experience the heart of our city in new ways.”

He added, “With the full opening of Waterfront Park this summer, Seattleites, commuters, and visitors alike will not only have a safer, more seamless route through the waterfront but a vibrant destination to ride to, not just through.”

Angela Brady, Director of the City’s Office of the Waterfront, Civic Projects, and Sound Transit, expressed her excitement, saying, “It’s a joy and honor to celebrate the opening of the protected bike lane along the waterfront. The Waterfront Seattle team has remained committed to ensuring that Waterfront Park is accessible and welcoming to all, and today we see that commitment take shape in the form of the completed protected bike lane.”

Friends of Waterfront Park said they aim to foster a connection to the area through free programming and activations. The new bike lanes are expected to encourage more visits, support local businesses, and contribute to a thriving waterfront.

The Seattle Center said it will provide dedicated operations, maintenance, and safety teams to ensure the bike lane is well cared for and safe. Construction of the Park Promenade, Bell Street improvements, and Pier 58 is ongoing, with overall completion expected this year.More information on the transformation of the Waterfront Park can be foundHERE.
